As a child, my parents adhered to common—sometimes valid, sometimes not—household medical practices of the day:  butter on burns (ouch!); plenty of mentholated ointment for colds (I can still smell it today); and whiskey, honey, and lemon for coughs (considerably more pleasant than butter on burns or mentholated ointment).  And, finally, there was immediate, aggressive action against the first sign of fever, no matter how slight.
