• A blood pressure reading that is less than 140 over 90 does not indicate hypertension and indicates that you don’t need to worry.  If either or both numbers are equal to or greater than 140 over 90 for an extended period of time, you have high blood pressure, or hypertension.  Hypertension is dangerous because it causes the heart to work extra hard.  This strain contributes to heart attacks and stroke.  High blood pressure can cause the heart to enlarge and can cause damage to the arteries, causing arterial disease.
• Most people occasionally feel their heart beat very fast, experience a fluttering in their chest, or notice that their heart skips a beat.  One of the most common arrhythmias is sinus arrhythmia, the change in heart rate that can occur normally when we take a breath.  These experiences may cause anxiety, and for the majority of people they are completely harmless.  You should not panic if you experience a few flutters or your heart races occasionally.  But if you have question about your heart rhythm or symptoms, check with a health care provider.
• High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), another form of heart disease, is caused by a high level of cholesterol in the blood that can cause plaque to form and accumulate leading to blockages in the arteries (atherosclerosis), increasing the risk for heart attack, stroke, circulation problems, and death.  There is overwhelming evidence that high cholesterol levels increase the risk for heart attack, circulation problems in the legs, stroke, and death.
